self care saved my life

At the beginning of 2021 I launched a series that is very dear to my heart. Take Care Tuesdays is a new series that I started on Instagram where I talk all things self care in hopes that we deepen and better the ways that we nurture ourselves. Every Tuesday for the past 4 weeks I have dropped a video where I’m providing useful insight on crafting routines and making self care a priority, even for your kids. I am so passionate about this series, so I wanted to share on my blog why I created the series in the first place.

From @denniinop

Self Care is something that I’ve been doing for a very long time, even before it became a trend in more recent years. Since I was six years old, I have been journaling to help me process my feelings and I’ve always loved doing things for myself that made me feel good like manicures, pedicures and facials. As an adult, new experiences have pushed me deeper into self care practices such as meditation, therapy, and shadow work.

Self care has carried me through every difficult transition I’ve ever had to figure out. When I first got married, I had to lean into self care as I figured out how to be a wife while maintaining my own identity. When I became a mother, self care pulled me out of postpartum depression. And just recently, self care has helped me tremendously in handling the grief of losing my grandmother.

Because I know what self care has done for me, I have become an enthusiast and developed a yearning to share about the inner work that has changed my life. I love to engage in conversations about taking care and I love to share and trade tips and stories about the transformative power of tuning into ones self. I am thankful to have been introduced to this at such a young age, even though it was birthed from a tragedy.

One of the most important lessons in taking care of myself that I’ve learned is that you shouldn’t wait until tragedy strikes to start taking time for you. Self care is maintenance. It’s something that you have to work at repeatedly and as frequently as possible. So many times have we all found ourselves sacrificing our own needs, or worst, not even knowing what are needs are because we’ve become consumed with taking care of others. Taking care of other people is something that we can’t always escape. Even if you’re not responsible for taking care of other people, life can sometimes get in the way of us checking in with ourselves. But when we make self care a habit and not something that we do as a last resort, we’ll find more joy and more of our truest self shining and ready for the world.

The first 2 episodes of Take Care Tuesday features information on creating morning and nighttime routines. Routines help with creating balance and also can be the starting points of building a successful, healthy life. In the 3rd episode I talk about prioritizing self care in our lives and how intentionally committing to do at least one thing for yourself everyday can lead to a fuller life. Episode 4 might be my favorite so far though, because it features my little one Marlee saying affirmations with me. In that episode I talk about the benefits of teaching children mindfulness and self care at an early age. In the weeks to come I plan to go even deeper into what it really means to take care of yourself.

One of my favorite things about this series is that I’m able to really demystify what we’ve learned self care to be. I always say that self care is so much deeper than spa days and baths and getaways. Self care doesn’t require fancy masks or extravagant experiences of any kind. Self care can be as simple as you want it to be and still provide the same results because what’s most important about it is taking time to do something good for yourself.

We live in a capitalistic world that glorifies busyness and getting no sleep, but I truly believe that there is no way that we can truly live full present lives running off of productivity and fumes. As my grandmother used to say to me, you can’t burn the candle from both ends.

I have so much more in store for this series and I hope that you’ll join me on this journey and even further your own journey in bettering your self care. Please head over to my instagram page to see the first 4 episodes. I want this to open up conversations about how we care for ourselves, so please don’t be shy! Let me now how you prioritize self care or what you like to do for yourself as an act of self care. And if you happen to have any suggestions on topics you’d like to see on future episodes, please send me a message. Make sure you follow me Instagram and turn on your notifications so that you’ll be able to see when new episodes drop!
